SPOILER //

We know the rules.

We know the territory.

We know how time advances.

We know when Farms mature.

We know when Cities become possible.

We know how States emerge from territorial scale.

We even know what it takes to reach a Kingdom.

There is only one variable that refuses to fit neatly into the diagram.

The Zips.

The world can be structured.

Time can be measured.

Territory can be calculated.

Development can be observed.

But a civilization is not made only of structure.

It is made of individuals.

And every Zip is one.

One species.

Not one personality.

Zips share a world.

They share rules.

They share the same territorial history.

But they do not need to share:

  • interests,
  • abilities,
  • priorities,
  • relationships,
  • reactions,
  • moods,
  • curiosity,
  • ambition,
  • attention.

One Zip may build.

Another may observe.

Another may help.

Another may become fascinated by something completely different.

The same Zip may behave differently tomorrow.

A Zip is not a unit waiting for a command.

A Zip is an inhabitant of the world.

IMPORTANT DISTINCTION

ZIP ≠ PLAYER UNIT

ZIP ≠ AUTOMATON

ZIP ≠ PERSONALITY TEMPLATE

ZIP ≠ SIMPLE RANDOMNESS

ZIP = INDIVIDUAL

This creates a problem.

A rather interesting one.

We can calculate the conditions around a Zip.

We can observe its history.

We can observe its relationships.

We can observe what it has done.

But knowing the world does not mean knowing exactly what every inhabitant will do next.

Imagine two Zips.

One spends an enormous amount of time creating something extraordinary.

Precise.

Difficult.

Beautiful.

When it is finished, the Zip steps back and looks at it.

Proud.

Then it notices another Zip nearby.

That Zip has dug a hole.

Nothing particularly remarkable about the hole.

And yet…

for reasons that may be entirely reasonable to that particular Zip…

the first Zip suddenly wishes it had dug the hole instead.

Was the first Zip intelligent?

Obviously.

Was the second?

Maybe.

Was the hole important?

We don’t know.

Will it become important?

We don’t know that either.

That’s the point.

INTELLIGENCE ≠ PREDICTABILITY

ABILITY ≠ INTEREST

MATURITY ≠ PERSONALITY

COMPLEXITY ≠ UNIFORMITY

CIVILIZATION ≠ AGREEMENT

You do not play the Zips.

This distinction matters.

A Zip is not a piece on your board.

It does not exist merely to receive:

MOVE

BUILD

WORK

ATTACK

WAIT

The fundamental relationship is different.

OBSERVE

INTERPRET

LEAVE

RETURN

DISCOVER

You close Zipvilization.

The world continues.

You return later.

The Zip you were watching may still be there.

It may have finished what it started.

It may have abandoned it.

Another Zip may have continued it.

Perhaps they are working together now.

Perhaps they are competing.

Perhaps neither of them cares anymore.

Perhaps something that seemed irrelevant has become important.

You were not there to decide.

This is observation.

Think less about controlling pieces on a board.

Think more about looking into a living colony.

At first you see movement.

Then patterns.

Then individuals.

Eventually you begin to recognize them.

The Zip with blue hair.

The one that keeps building.

The one that watches everyone else.

The one that seems interested in everything.

The one that was doing something yesterday and has apparently changed its mind completely.

Not classes.

Not predefined roles.

Individuals.

And when enough individuals coexist…

relationships appear.

Habits appear.

Preferences appear.

Cooperation may appear.

Competition may appear.

Patterns may appear.

And sometimes those patterns may become larger than the individuals who started them.

That is where observation becomes interesting.

SYSTEM MODEL

WORLD ................. STRUCTURED

TERRITORY ............. DETERMINISTIC

TIME .................. MEASURABLE

DEVELOPMENT ........... CANONICAL

ZIP POPULATION ........ OBSERVABLE

INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOUR .. ?

HORIZON ............... OPEN

The ? is not an error.

It is not permission to invent arbitrary behaviour either.

Zips exist inside rules.

Context matters.

History matters.

Other Zips matter.

What happened before matters.

But rules do not require identical personalities.

And structure does not require predictable lives.

ZIP BEHAVIOUR ≠ PLAYER COMMAND

ZIP BEHAVIOUR ≠ PURE RANDOMNESS

A useful approximation might be:

CHARACTER

+ CONTEXT

+ STATE

+ HISTORY

+ RELATIONSHIPS

+ INTERACTION

= ?

Do not solve the question mark.

Observe it.

A civilization of individuals

A Farm is not interesting merely because it contains Zips.

It becomes interesting because those Zips are not interchangeable.

A City is not simply a larger Farm.

It contains more individuals.

More encounters.

More histories.

More relationships.

More possibilities.

A State increases the space in which those relationships can develop.

A Kingdom increases it again.

Therefore:

MORE ZIPS ≠ MORE OBEDIENCE

MORE ZIPS = MORE POSSIBILITIES

This is why development does not tell us the story in advance.

We know the architecture.

We do not know the biography of every Zip that will inhabit it.

We know the conditions.

We do not know every relationship those conditions will produce.

We know where civilization begins.

We do not know what civilization will become.

SPOILER ≠ SCRIPT

There is no hidden finished story waiting to be revealed.

We don’t know exactly what will happen.

We don’t know exactly who will cause it.

We don’t know which insignificant action will disappear…

and which insignificant action will still matter 2,000,000 blocks later.

Horizonte remains open.

Maybe tomorrow they build something.

Maybe they discover something.

Maybe they cooperate.

Maybe they disagree.

Maybe one Zip creates something extraordinary.

Maybe another digs a hole.

Maybe everybody becomes interested in the hole.

Maybe nobody does.

We don’t know.

And we shouldn’t.

Because the question at the heart of Zipvilization is not:

What can I make them do?

It is:

What have they done?

And eventually, perhaps:

Why?

The protocol can record state.

SolumWorld can interpret valid world state.

SolumTools can make it legible.

SolumView can make it visible.

Artificial Intelligence may help investigate what happened.

The Human may observe it.

But none of those things should silently replace the individual Zip with a puppet.

OBSERVATION > CONTROL

The world provides conditions.

Time provides development.

Interaction provides possibilities.

The Zips provide themselves.

WORLD STATUS ............. STABLE

PROTOCOL STATUS .......... OPERATIONAL

ZIP STATUS ............... INDIVIDUAL

PREDICTABILITY ........... NOT GUARANTEED

HORIZON .................. OPEN

Come back tomorrow.

Something may have changed.

Perhaps the Territory.

Perhaps the civilization.

Perhaps just one Zip.

Sometimes that may be enough.

[THIS IS NOT GAMEPLAY]

[THIS IS OBSERVATION]

Zips will be Zips.

We have no idea exactly what that means yet.

Neither do they.
